Bible Society in Poland (BSP) was founded in 1816 as an auxiliary of the British and Foreign Bible Society. Its main activities are translation, publication and distribution of the Bible. All this is done in close co-operation with all Christian Churches in Poland. The goal of the Bible Society is to achieve the widest possible, effective and meaningful distribution of the Holy Scriptures and to help people interact with the Word of God.
Bible Society in Poland is an associated member of the United Bible Societies (UBS) and an associated member of the Polish Ecumenical Council (PEC). It serves Christians and Christian Churches and organizations, as well as people interested in the Bible and all in spiritual need.
The Bible Society in Poland was founded because of a great lack of Holy Scriptures among the Polish nation. At that time it distributed two Polish Bible translations: a Catholic one (first published 1599), translated by Father Jakub Wujek from Latin Vulgate and a Protestant one, translated by Polish Protestants from Hebrew and Greek, first published 1632. The last one is called Danzig Bible, because it was published in Gdańsk (Danzig).
The new Bible translation prepared and published by the Bible Society appeared 1975 and is called Warsaw Bible. This is a Protestant translation done by famous Lutheran biblicists and used mainly by Polish Protestants.
Later the Bible Society initiated a new translation of the New Testament which was published 1991. This is a Polish common language version, where contemporary Polish was used. The translator’s team was composed of biblicists from different Protestants Churches and one Old Catholic biblical scholar from Polish national Catholic Church.
In the beginning of the 90ties of the 20th century the Bible Society in Poland initiated a big project of Ecumenical Bible Translation. The New Testament was first published in October 2001, the Wisdom Books of the Old Testament – in October 2008 and the Deuterocanonical Books of the Old Testament – in February 2012. The process of translating and editing the next volumes continues and many scholars from different Polish Churches are involved in it.
Our publications, mainly printed by the United Bible Societies channels, are distributed through the bookshop, situated in one of the main streets of Warsaw, or through parishes and congregations, as well as through many other bookshops and wholesalers.
Since few years the Bible Society leads two important free distribution projects: the Bible for children and youth and the Bible in every prison cell. For children and youngsters the Bible is introduced as a manual for life, for the inmates – as a source of hope, comfort and forgiveness.
The members of staff are grateful for every support for Bible Society projects. Please, pray for our mission and help to develop the activities.
